Coding and Underwater Localization

Ballard Blair

The use of direct sequence spread spectrum codes (DSSS) for underwater localization is a practice that has been taking place for a while, but thus far there has not been a good review of how to match a specific code to a specific environment. The types of environments we are interested in include deep ocean, mid-water column, shallow water, and coastline. In this talk I will give a quick overview of what DSSS codes are, why they work, and why we are interested in them. Next I will present our research and ideas for where to use which codes
and how to choose the right code for the right environment. This talk will conclude with our future plans for this research.
